Winter Feva Training Blog at Bewl!

Sailing blog

On 27th October, eight Feva’s each with a crew and a helm ventured out into probably one of the wildest Saturdays this winter has seen. We had had very detailed brief from Chris about how to tune a boat specifically for certain conditions. Within minutes of launching almost everyone had capsized and so we came in and after lunch decided the best plan was to go out taking it in turns to sail so there were less boats on the water. This proved effective as there were far less capsizes and everyone was warmer. In the debrief we all agreed that we had a far greater knowledge on how to handle windy conditions especially tacks and gybes.

On 15th December Francis Peters took us for our second Feva training day. One again we had a decent wind and after deciding what we wanted to achieve during the day, for us mainly racing starts, we launched. In morning, we focused on tacking upwind and gybing down wind with the spinnaker in follow the leader. In the afternoon we took what we had learnt in the morning to improve on our racing. We spent the time working on starts and how to time it so when we set off we were in the prime position. As the day wore on we understood this a lot more and we found it influences the whole race.

We enjoyed both sessions especially the second, since we gained a lot from Francis despite being the only girls.
