Welcome to the Laser Fleet

Welcome to the Laser fleet home page at Bewl Valley Sailing Club, my name is Martin Dennant and I am the BVSC Laser fleet captain.
The Laser fleet is one of the strongest fleets at the Club and we are fortunate to have some very quick sailors, giving us a very high standard of racing. We have over 30 boats that race at the Club and what is extremely pleasing is that we are seeing a number of new members, who are totally new to racing, joining the fleet and getting stuck in. One of my priorities for 2010 is to get our BVSC Laser Racing Academy, aimed at this group, well and truely off the ground.
Racing
We race on a Sunday and typically have 4 races (committee boat starts) during the summer and 3 in the winter. We offer regular training during the summer and have a UKLA Youth programme, with some 35 Youths from all over the SE, running down at the Club in the winter.
A good way to try out the Club is to come to one of our Club Opens. The next major event will be our Open Spring Thaw Series in March 2010. Keep an eye out for it when our 2010 racing programme is publised later in the year.
Our Laser Open this year was run on Sunday 27th Sept – photographs and results can be found below, together with the final results for the SE Laser Grand Prix Circuit.
As a Club we also have a Winter membership which runs from 1st October to the end of March each year. Typically, the Winter represents our most exciting racing period and race numbers are strong. See The Club tab for details on Winter membership.
We have a great stretch of water to race upon and our fleet numbers are going from strength to strength – I hope you decide to come and join us. If you have any queries, please contact me on chrisl_johnson@uk.ibm.com
Training
This year we had some excellent coaching from a couple of external coaches. The feedback that we had from both of this year’s sessions was extremely pleasing. The 2009 training dates have now all completed and I am now looking at what we run for 2010.

Racing Academy
What is very pleasing is that, due to this year’s training, I now have 6 names in the Racing Academy. I see this group as being really important and something I want to nurture and encourage. By forming this community, I hope it will give those who are new to racing and/or those who find themselves at the back of the fleet, a group of like-minded individuals who can race against each other and encourage one another on. I am in the process of contacting the individuals and offering them a ‘buddy’ from the main group of racers. I really hope I see a number of these new faces on the start line.
What if I missed the Training but would like to join the Academy?
There is no substitute for just coming down and joining in with the Sunday racing – racing starts circa 10:40 every Sunday. Send me an email or come up and talk to me down at the Club and get yourself added to the distribution list – I would be delighted to hear from you.
Personal Handicaps (PHs)
BVSC Series results are based upon PYR. However, I also record the results within the Beaver, based upon Personal Handicaps (PYR adjusted for PHs) – see below for the latest PHs. Note: the PHs don’t represent actual minutes of time but are derived from the RYA’s Performance Indicator (PI) approach for calculating Personal Handicaps – as defined in YR2. We have then taken the RYA PI and divided it by 10 to create our own Bewl PHs. If you are not on the list, don’t worry.
• To get a PH, all you need to do is sail 5 races
• PHs are adjusted at the end of each Series
