The Enterprise fleet at Bewl is one of the largest in the club with 78 boats registered. I hope you will find we are a friendly bunch who welcome all new sailors with 'Ents' and we take an active part in the activities of the club. The Enterprise is an excellent entry level boat for beginners but is enjoyed by all levels of competency. Usually sailed with a crew and helm, it can be managed single handed. Boats come in either wood or “plastic” and sometimes a combination of the two. Plastic ones are generally easier to maintain, well maintained wooded ones look nicer, but do take a lot of love, care and attention to keep them in tip-top condition. The choice is yours.

Enterprise Fleet Captain

Currently the Fleet Captain is Nick Gallwey. Nick usually sails on a Sunday morning in the points series racing in an Enterprise called “Close to the Edge”, sail number 22085. If you own or are contemplating owning an Enterprise, or are a new member with an Enterprise please come and make yourself known and he will be happy to point you in the right direction. Nick can also be contacted by e-mail at nick.gallwey@prupim.com.

Sunday series racing

Enterprises are one of the recognised classes at Bewl and have their own start in each of the series run throughout the year. There are Trophies for all the winners including a 'First Timers' trophy for the highest placed helm who is new to the racing scene. We try and encourage new members to participate in the racing scene whilst understanding that racing is not for everyone (Ents' are excellent cruising and family fun boats as well).

Gentle Introduction to Racing

For those that would like to try racing but are apprehensive:-

Throughout the year we hold regular sessions on a Saturday for newcomers to racing, or those that wish to improve their racing techniques or have always wanted to race but were feeling timid about trying. The sessions normally start in April and are free. They consist of a bit of theory (not too much and without too much technicality) and practice starts, mini-races and advice on rigging and tuning.

We have been running the sessions for three years so far and mostly have had a good turn out which has lead to a number of new racers on the scene and hopefully more in the future.

Wednesday Evenings From Ist May to 31st August

Every Wednesday evening between these two dates there is club sailing for all from 6.30.pm. The 'Ent' fleet usually turn out in good numbers for this (often more boats than on Sundays). It is a very informal session with free sailing, if you want to, or you can join in the 'impromptu, very informal' racing sessions which normally take place. Everyone has a good time without the pressure of official starts, signing on etc. The races normally run on the basis of 'lets sail round these 3 marks, start in 2 minutes after somebody yells start'.

If in the mean time you would like to swot up in a very basic way we have prepared a booklet called 'a beginners guide to racing' which, hopefully, takes out all the 'mystique' of racing, and which we use for the training days.
