WELCOME to the Laser Fleet

Welcome to the Laser fleet home page at Bewl Valley Sailing Club, my name is Chris Johnson and I am the BVSC Laser fleet captain.

The Laser fleet is one of the strongest fleets at the Club and we are fortunate to have some very quick sailors, giving us a very high standard of racing. Our 2007 Laser Open is a good demonstration of this. Our event is typically the last Open on the UKLA South East Grand Prix and, as a result, is one of the best- attended events on the circuit, especially for the top travellers who are coming along for the circuit’s prize giving. Despite that, BVSC took the top 2 slots, had 5 boats in the top 10, and 8 boats in the top 15.

We race on a Sunday and typically have 4 races (committee boat starts) during the summer and 3 in the winter. We offer regular training during the summer and have a UKLA Youth programme, with some 35 Youths from all over the SE, running down at the Club in the winter.

We have a great stretch of water to race upon and our fleet numbers are going from strength to strength – I hope you decide to come and join us. If you have any queries, please contact me on chrisl_johnson@uk.ibm.com

Training - Introduction to Racing

The Intro to Racing sessions are for anyone who would like to learn the basic essentials of Club racing. Each session is a full day, very practical, and (having helped run these days I know they are) terrific fun and good way to meet others in ‘the same boat’! By the end of the day you will have the skills you need to come down and race on a Sunday.

The Intro to Racing sessions are advertised within the main Club Training Prospectus (click on the Training tab and scroll down to the link for the prospectus or ask for a hardcopy from the office).

These sessions run once a month on a Saturday and cost £20. Remaining dates for 2008 are:

• Sept 6th

• Oct 5th

• Nov 2nd

• Dec 7th

Training - Intermediate Training

I am actively considering laying on an intermediate coaching day (full day on a Saturday), probably mid-late September time. The cost is likely to be in the order of £15 and it designed for racers with a personal handicap (PH) of 5 and higher. Don't worry if you haven't got a handicap, if you would like to attend let me know – email me today! Course content is likely to include starts, tacking & gybing techniques, mark rounding & boat handling, and the principal racing rules. Only a small amount will be classroom-based, the majority will be based out upon the water.

Personal Handicaps

The Laser fleet are running Personal Handicaps (PHs) for the 2007/2008 season which means that there will be results for both PYR (boat finishing order) and Personal Handicap (PYR adjusted for PHs) - see below for the latest PHs. Note: the PHs don’t represent actual minutes of time but are derived from the RYA’s Performance Indicator (PI) approach for calculating Personal Handicaps – as defined in YR2. We have then taken the RYA PI and divided it by 10 to create our own Bewl PHs. If you are not on the list, don’t worry.

• To get a PH, all you need to do is sail 5 races

• PHs are adjusted at the end of each Series
